Press Release
26th March 2009 Aviation Education It was all hands to the decks at The Helicopter Museum in Weston-super-Mare as a record number of school visits attended the aviation museum this week. Volunteers worked full time to accommodate the 255 students from local schools in Worle and Bristol and even one from across the channel in France. “The education programme that has been set up here is proving a real success” said Museum Education Officer Rod Wakelam “we wanted to create a more interactive series of educational activities to challenge the children’s minds and capture their imaginations, rather than just the usual tours of the aircraft in the hangar.” Hence helicopter cockpits have been opened up and teaching now takes place inside the large EH101 passenger aircraft. There are film shows, lectures, craft workshops and even pilot costumes for the younger children to dress up in. “The feed back so far has been extremely positive from both students and teachers alike” Rod added “and we are building on this initial success with the creation of a new ‘technology interactive zone’ within the museum which we plan to open later this year.” For details on School visits and outreach presentations please contact the museum’s Education Officer Rod Wakelam on 01934 635227 or by email at roderickwakelam@hotmail.com
