Press Release                               20th June 2009

 GIRLS ONLY DAY

The Helicopter Museum in Weston-super-Mare is teaming up with the WISE organisation (Women into Science, Engineering and Construction) to host a free one day event for young girls in North Somerset to explore the world of helicopters. Female students will be able to meet representatives of different organisations from within the engineering industry, who will have stands at the event.

“It is a chance for local girls to learn about helicopters, aviation and engineering” explained Museum Education Officer Rod Wakelam “so that when, in years to come they have to make career decisions, they might just decide that engineering is for them.”

Activities on the day will include talks on engineering, tours of the museum, fun practical workshops and discussion sessions.

Through its initiatives, the WISE campaign has helped to double the percentage of female engineering graduates from 7% in 1984 to 15% today and its patrons include Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal.

The WISE Day takes place on Thursday 16th July and is totally free to girls from years 6,7,8 and 9 and to all accompanying teaching staff as well.

To book attendance please contact Rod Wakelam at roderickwakelam@hotmail.com as admission is limited to 150 places.
