Royal Visit to The Helicopter Museum

It was announced today that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth 11 and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh KC KT are to visit The Helicopter Museum on 20th July.

During the visit to the Museum, at Weston-super-Mare in Somerset, the Queen will renew her acquaintance with a Westland Wessex Mark 4 helicopter of the former Queen’s Flight, which is now in the museum’s collection, before unveiling a plaque with the Duke to mark the opening of a new Conservation & Engineering hangar.

Recently completed by the Museum using money mostly raised internally, and with the help of volunteers, the building will provide new restoration facilities for the volunteer engineering force but will also be used as a training centre for future helicopter engineers.

In a brief statement the Chairman of the Trustees and THM founder Capt. Elfan ap Rees said today “We all feel tremendously honoured to be hosting the Queen on this auspicious occasion.  The visit is a huge tribute to the volunteers and sponsors who have kept the faith and made the Museum such a success.”

Almost 100 volunteers and sponsor representatives who have supported THM since it was first opened to the public in 1988 have been invited for the occasion.
