Press Release
2nd July 2009
Volunteers at The Helicopter Museum in Weston-super-Mare have just completed work on restoring a Benson B8 Autogyro. However this aircraft will not be on permanent display at the World famous Aviation Museum, as it has another, more important role to play. “Not all local schools are able to visit the museum for various reasons” explained Education Officer Rod Wakelam “So we decided to try and take a small part of the museum out to them.” Modified to be able to be towed on the road, the Autogyro has already been busy over the last couple of weeks attending different School events and Local Fete’s in the Weston-super-Mare area. “The whole point of the Autogyro is to let children sit in it and have a go at the controls,” added Rod “ to get them interested in aviation from an early age.”. However it is not just children who are intrigued by the machine but adults too, including members of the local constabulary. “We attended a fundraising event this week and the police in attendance were fascinated with the machine, however I don’t think it will ever replace the police car!!” joked Rod.
